Love

“ENTIRELY COMMITTED”

Love in Hebrew is both "אהבה" (Ahavah), which signifies a profound, encompassing commitment that goes beyond mere emotions to include actions, choices, and responsibilities, and "חסד" (Chesed), meaning loving-kindness or steadfast love. Love involves not only a deep affection but also a commitment to act righteously and kindly, driven by a genuine desire for the well-being of others and a close relationship with G-d.

“And you shall love the L-rd your G-d with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might" (Deuteronomy 6:5)

This statement in Deuteronomy encapsulates the essence of the Ahavah style of love in its directive to commit oneself entirely to G-d. This verse illustrates that love for G-d is to permeate every aspect of one's being, influencing thoughts, actions, and decisions. It suggests that true love for G-d manifests in obedience to His commandments, a theme echoed throughout all of scripture.

This type of love is not passive but requires active engagement of positive commands (such as prayer, study, and charity), not just avoiding negative commands (such as do not steal, do not murder, do not commit idolatry).

The physical expression of love through acts of kindness and justice serves as a reflection of the heavenly love that G-d has for His creation, establishing a bridge between the Divine and the mundane.

Love is not merely about emotional feelings but a transformative power of one's actions and intentions. Serving G-d with joy and heart filled with love for G-d and His creations can elevate even mundane actions to the level of Divine service.
